Responsibilities

Generally speaking, a TXCC VISTA will work with their site in three areas:

  • Work with the faculty and administration of their campus to raise awareness of and promote (a teaching method that incorporates service into the academic curriculum)
  • Work with the students and faculty, as well as the departments of student affairs and academic affairs to promote and support their campus on its way to becoming an .
  • Work with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to develop community outreach programs that achieve the goals of the "Education. Go Get It." Campaign (a campaign designed to get half a million first generation college students into Texas colleges and universities by 2015).

How a VISTA's work is directed varies from campus to campus, but these goals are the heart of each and every TXCC/VISTA workplan. We have VISTA slots open all across the state - Austin, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Houston, Lubbock, and San Antonio.

  • In exchange for a year of service, TXCC VISTAs earn the following benefits:
  • Choice of: Post-service Education Award of $4,725 to pay for college tuition or student loans, or End-of-service stipend of $1,200
  • Student Loan Forbearance
  • Monthly living allowance
  • Health Insurance
  • Relocation Allowance if relocating from outside Texas
  • Non-competitive eligibility for federal employment in the year following service
  • Housing and meal plans are available at some campuses)

Qualifications

The following qualifications are required for acceptance:

  • Associates Degree or Bachelors Degree
  • Demonstrate commitment to and experience in community service or service-learning
  • Experience working with college students
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including conflict resolution and public speaking
  • Strong skills in project and multi-task management, leadership, event planning, and time management
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle)
